WALES wing Owen Lane is aiming to be fit for selection after his Six Nations setback when rugby returns with derby matches in August.

The plan is for the Welsh regions to lock horns at the end of August in fixtures behind closed doors after being sidelined because of the coronavirus pandemic since March.

Cardiff Blues speedster Lane has been working towards a return in lockdown after suffering a hamstring injury when training with the Wales squad before the Six Nations campaign.

The 22-year-old had an operation and is aiming to add to his tally of 23 tries in 47 regional games when the green light is given to return to the field.

"I'm still rehabbing that injury," said Lane. "I'm still not 100 per cent and that's my main goal.

"I'm just thinking about how I get myself back fit and into a position that if we do go back to training, I would also be able to train fully and be available for selection."

Lane, like all rugby players, has been training alone and believes the lack of match action for his teammates has made rehabilitation easier.

"I know it's tough for people who can't go outside but for me it's been quite easy," he said.

"In a weird way it's taken the stress off the injury and the timescale and it's allowed me to be a bit more reserved in my rehab and laid-back in my approach."

Lane scored a try against Ireland on his international debut ahead of the World Cup and then was a late call-up to Japan when Josh Navidi was sent home injured.

The speedster won his second cap in the play-off for third place against New Zealand when he started on the wing.

"My first cap was quite strange because I shared that with Rhys Carré. We've known each other since we were 10 and we've played with each other throughout the age-grades, the Blues and schools rugby, so to play together for the first time was pretty amazing – it just made the occasion even more special," said Lane.

"I was lucky to get the reward of playing against Ireland after all the hard training before the World Cup. That was my first cap, but then came the disappointment the day after of not being selected for the squad gong to Japan.

"Within the space of 24 to 48 hours I had the highlight of my career, and being over the moon, to the biggest set-back.

"Luckily enough I got my shot in that third-fourth play-off game and I got my second cap against the All Blacks."

Lane, who featured in Wayne Pivac's first matchday squad in the uncapped fixture against the Barbarians, will battle for more caps in the fiercely competitive back three.

Leigh Halfpenny, Liam Williams, Josh Adams, George North and Johnny McNicholl featured in the Six Nations while Jonah Holmes, Louis Rees-Zammit, Hallam Amos, Ashton Hewitt and Steff Evans are also in the mix.
