Newport County boss wants 6,000 fans for Plymouth Argyle clash

The visitors sold out their allocation of 1,037 tickets last week and Flynn is banking on the backing of plenty of County fans to drown out the travelling supporters.

The Exiles boss is hoping for an attendance of around 6,000 and he expects the atmosphere to be red hot, despite the forecast wet weather.

“I think on Saturday they [the new signings] will get a taste of the real atmosphere that Rodney Parade brings,” said Flynn.

“Plymouth always travel well. They have good supporters and they are a very big club in this league.

“It’s going to be a noisy afternoon and my players thrive on that sort of atmosphere.

“I’m hoping we get 6,000, we’ll see. We want more supporters. I don’t see any reason why we won’t have a big crowd.

“I think it was a decent turnout against Mansfield for the first game of the season [4,481] but there are a lot of people on holiday and there are a lot of games in the first month so it’s really draining on the purse-strings.

“That’s why I said people should save their money [and not go to Gillingham in midweek] because I want to pack out Rodney Parade as much as we can, as often as we can.

“A little bit of rain won’t bother me,” he added. “It’s going to lash down and that just means I won’t be wearing a suit!

“It couldn’t be any worse than the wind last week [at Cambridge]. Hopefully it effects it for the better for us.”

Flynn is expecting a tough test from Argyle, who have so far won 3-0 at Crewe Alexandra and 1-0 at home to Colchester United in League Two, as well as beating Leyton Orient 2-0 at home in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash.

“I think they’re definitely one of the favourites to go up,” said Flynn.

“I’m expecting a really tough game.

“They’ve got a good up and coming manager in Ryan [Lowe].

“Danny Mayor is probably the best player in the league and we’ve got to keep him quiet.

“But they’ve got other threats as well – Byron Moore, [Kyle] McFadzean, [Antoni] Sarcevic.

“They’ve got good players and a good squad. It’s going to be a tough afternoon.”

After successive draws with Mansfield Town and Cambridge United in the league, followed by a penalty shootout win in the cup at Gillingham, Flynn is targeting a first three points of the season tomorrow.

“If we win, it’s an unbelievable start,” he said.

“If we don’t, at least we’ve only got to play them once more after this.

“We’ve played well so far and we’ve looked solid, apart from 12 minutes against Mansfield in a game we should have won comfortably.

“There’s a lot of good signs, but we can’t afford to have any blips against Plymouth because they’ll punish us and we’ll end up empty-handed.”

Goalkeeper Nick Townsend was the star of the Carabao Cup win at Priestfield with one penalty save in normal time and two in the shootout, as well as a series of important stops in open play.

He is now putting pressure on Tom King, who has played in the two league games to date.

“There’s no such thing as people being guaranteed their slots,” said Flynn.

“I know what Nick can do. He’s a fantastic goalkeeper and he was quality on Tuesday night.

“But Kingy did well at Cambridge as well, so it’s given me a decision to make and I’d much rather that.

“Whatever position it is, I want competition for place and I think Tuesday night showed that we’re going to have that.”

Fans are urged to arrive early tomorrow to avoid long queues at the ticket office ahead of the match.
