MANAGER Michael Flynn was delighted by the commitment his Newport County AFC players showed in claiming a point at Walsall on Tuesday night.

The 0-0 draw means County maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

Flynn’s men are 12th in the League Two table after three games – three points behind leaders Crewe Alexandra, who they host on Saturday.

“The way the boys dug in, the work-rate they put in, was second to none,” said the Exiles boss after the final whistle at Bescot Stadium.

“It’s everything that I want from my players.

“Yes, we weren’t very good going forward but we limited them to few chances and we had probably had as many half chances as them.

“I said that we want to turn the losses into draws and the draws into wins away from home so it’s not a bad away start at the minute – we’ve played two and we haven’t conceded a goal [in the league].”

The point extended the club record of 14 regular-season games unbeaten.

“I’m proud of the record,” said Flynn. “It’s a massive achievement and I really thought they dug in. I was so proud of them – the way they kept going.

“They didn’t hide or shirk responsibility. We had Josh Sheehan (above) tracking back, putting tackles in and clearing up and he’s not renowned for that but, I’ll tell you what, he’s got it in his game.”

Flynn made just one change on Tuesday night, leaving attacking talents Corey Whitely, George Nurse and Lewis Collins on the bench.

“I thought about putting Corey on a few times, and Nursey,” he added.

“But Jamma [Jamille Matt] had a knock and I didn’t know if I was going to have to take him off.

“And if we put Corey on, I think it opens us up a little bit. It gives us more chance of scoring, but it gives us more chance of conceding.

"There are loads of reasons why I did nothing.”
