HE ONLY made a handful of appearances in English football and he describes his brief loan spell at Newport County AFC as a waste of time, but Flo Bojaj is dreaming of playing against the Three Lions later this year.

If it happens, it would represent quite an achievement for the 23-year-old striker who arrived in the UK as a Kosovan refugee in the late 1990s when he was just a toddler.

A love of football helped Bojaj adjust to life in his new surroundings and, after starting out at Boreham Wood, he joined the youth ranks at Huddersfield.

After making his first-team debut in the Championship as a teenager, he was sent out on loan during the 2016-2017 season – first at Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership and then to County.

Bojaj was one of 12 new arrivals at Rodney Parade in January 2017 with the Exiles mired in a relegation battle under Graham Westley.

And it’s not a time that the striker looks back on fondly.

“I think the loans weren’t right at the time,” he told ITV.com.

“Kilmarnock was OK as I learned quite a lot there but I don’t think I got a chance, as I played just one game despite doing really well in training.

“At Newport, if I could take it back, I wouldn’t have gone there. I think I got 10 minutes and no other chance, just training, doing nothing and wasting time, really.”

Bojaj returned to Huddersfield after one 15-minute appearance as a substitute in a 1-1 home draw with Colchester United.

He was released by the Terriers in the summer of 2017 and ended up playing for Welling United, then Walton & Hertsham in non-league.

But Bojaj is now enjoying success in Bulgarian top-tier side Etar Veliko Tarnovo and the former Albania under-17 international is now setting his sights on representing the country of his birth at full international level.

Kosovo will face England in the Euro 2020 qualifiers at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium in September and Bojaj is desperate to be involved.

“That’s one of my main goals right now is to get a call-up for them,” he said.

“I recently got my Kosovan passport and my agent has been speaking to some people from the federation as they’ve been watching a few of my games and they said they would keep an eye on me – 100 per cent I will play for them one day.

“When I saw the group, I was quite shocked. I was just wishing I was playing for them, as it would be good to play against England.”
