NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn has confirmed that midfielder Joss Labadie will be his captain for the season, while Mark O'Brien takes on a new role.

Labadie wore the armband up to March 2018 before suffering an anterior cruciate ligament knee injury and briefly leaving the club last summer.

O'Brien, Mickey Demetriou, Fraser Franks, Andrew Crofts and Padraig Amond all skippered the side last season, but Labadie led out the team against Mansfield Town last Saturday.

And he will do so again at Cambridge United tomorrow, even though O'Brien is available again after missing last week's League Two opener due to suspension.

"Joss will be the captain on the pitch," explained Flynn. "I think we get more out of him. He takes that responsibility really well.

"And Mark will be vice-captain and club captain because he’s got a special place in Newport County’s history and he’s at an age where I think he can handle the responsibility of being the face of the club around the community.

"I think those two are a good fit and it should bring the best out of both of them."
