NEWPORT County AFC star Robbie Willmott insists his love for the club means he’s prepared to play anywhere to help the team.

Willmott has flourished on the right wing for the Exiles in recent seasons where his crosses for the likes of Padraig Amond and Jamille Matt have proved a useful source of goals.

But his versatility means the 29-year-old has also been used as a wing-back and in central midfield, where he started in last week’s League Two opener against Mansfield Town.

And, ahead of today’s trip to Cambridge United, Willmott says he is happy to follow manager Michael Flynn’s instructions.

“I played centre midfield on Saturday, which isn’t my natural position,” he said.

“I play wherever I’m told. And when I get stick from some supporters, I’d say I’d rather a player who is happy to play anywhere than one who says I’d rather just sit on the bench.

“I’m not that type of player. This club means a lot to me so I’ll play anywhere the gaffer told me to play to help the squad.”

Willmott is also expecting some animosity from the home fans at Abbey Stadium this afternoon but he’s looking forward to facing the side where he started his professional career.

County are targeting a seventh successive win over the U’s and he’s confident that they can keep that run going, even if he expects a tougher challenge from his former side this season.

“It’s been a fantastic fixture for us lately,” said Willmott. “It’s been one of those games that you look forward to.

“I don’t want to get too confident, but we’ve got a great record against them.

“We seem to go there and play some great football. Last season [a 3-0 win in April] was an unbelievable away performance.

“Cambridge struggled after their FA Cup run [in 2015],” added Willmott.

“They spent the money wrongly and had to cut their budget.

“They obviously had a terrible season last season. I didn’t want them to go down but they were obviously down there for a reason.

“But they’ve brought in some good players – Marc Richards scores goals wherever he goes.

“They’ve strengthened well and they’re going to be a lot better than last season. They look a lot more organised so we expect a real tough game.”

But Willmott believes that County are also stronger than they were last season, when they lost in the play-off final, and he’s expecting another successful campaign.

“If we can have a full 90 minutes of the performance that we put in last week in the first half, I think we’ll match anyone,” he said.

“We looked at the points that we dropped last season and we know that if we improved away from home, we had a good chance of going up automatically.

“If we can grab some vital away points this season then we’ve got a real chance – not just of making the play-offs but potentially going one better.

“There’s a long way to go and we need to put those performances in first, but I feel we’ve got enough in the changing room to go one better.”
