NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn is unsure whether the financial boost of TV coverage for the Carabao Cup second-round tie against West Ham United will boost his chances of signing another striker.

Flynn has previously stated that he would have to move players out before he could further strengthen his squad.

But County’s coffers have now been swelled by the decision to show the Hammers tie live on Sky Sports on August 27.

Asked if that would help him strengthen his squad before the window closes on September 2, Flynn said: “I’ll leave that question to the board. I’d love to get one more in.

“It’s a fantastic reward for the boys with another Premier League team coming to Rodney Parade,” he added.

“It will be another challenging night for us. The players are going to have the opportunity to go up against Premier League players again and we’ll give it our best shot.

“It’s one of those evenings when we’ve got nothing to lose and it will hopefully capture the imagination of the Newport public.

“And it’s massive financially. If we hadn’t had the cup runs, we would have been in a lot of trouble financially.

“The first one against Spurs cleared any lingering debts and last year gave us profit and money in the bank. That’s how crucial it is. Thankfully, the draws have been good to us.

“We’ve got to do whatever we can to bring money into the football club and fortunately we’ve been lucky to draw West Ham, because notoriously there’s not much money in the Carabao Cup.”
