NEWPORT County AFC goal heroes Jamille Matt and Mark O’Brien both praised the part played by the travelling fans in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Swindon Town.

A total of 755 Exiles fans made the short trip to the County Ground and they cheered their team on to a second away win of the season in League Two.

The previous win on the road came at Forest Green Rovers on August 31, when 898 County fans were in attendance.

And Matt and O’Brien both insisted that the vocal away following makes a big difference to the players on the pitch.

“The fans were brilliant,” said Matt, who scored his second goal of the season to seal the three points eight minutes from the end on Saturday.

“When you come out of the tunnel and you see all the travelling fans, it gives you that little bit of a buzz and an extra push.

“The fans have always been brilliant since I’ve been here and they’re probably the best I’ve played in front of and it gives you that little bit of a push to keep doing extra for them on the pitch.”

Centre-back O’Brien, who opened the scoring with a header from a Robbie Willmott corner before half-time, told iFollowExiles: “The supporters have been brilliant.

“They’ve been brilliant from when they travel away with us.

“For them travelling these distances, whether it’s an hour up the road or five hours to Carlisle and loads of different places, they always turn up in their numbers.

“They are always heard and it’s always great to put on a performance for the fans.”

County host Carlisle United at the weekend and O’Brien expects another big turnout at Rodney Parade.

“Like we always say, when we get the support turning out at home it’s like a fortress for us and not many teams enjoy coming there,” he added.

“If we can get the fans out in numbers again, we’ll put on another performance.”
