JAMILLE Matt spent less than two months at Stevenage yet what the striker learned from the then Lamex Stadium boss has always stayed with him.

The Newport County frontman is set to go up against his former club on Saturday when League Two strugglers Boro travel to Rodney Parade.

Between November 2015 and January 2016, Jamaica-born Matt, 30, scored once in eight games for the Hertfordshire outfit while on loan from Fleetwood Town.

Matt made the move after talking to former Fleetwood team-mate Steven Schumacher, a Stevenage player back then, and a change in manager at his parent club.

When Matt swapped League One for League Two it meant he got to work with former England, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur centre-forward Teddy Sheringham.

Sheringham had taken charge of Stevenage in the May, his first foray into football management after a stellar career at club and international level.

And Matt remembers his short stint under Sheringham with fondness.

“It was a good loan for me,” he said. “I had come back from a year out injured and played a little bit for Fleetwood who then changed their manager.

“I wasn’t playing as much as I wanted under him (Steven Pressley) and after 12 months of rehab all I wanted was to play games.

“Steven Schumacher spoke to me about coming and I jumped at the chance.

“I enjoyed my two months there and Teddy Sheringham was manager at the time.

“I’ve got nothing but positive things to say about him, he was really good with me, and I’ve spoken to him a couple of times since.

“He had so much enthusiasm and always wanted to be involved in training. We would normally finish at 1pm but he would still be outside at 3pm or 4pm working with the lads on their finishing or helping the youngsters.

“You could tell he loved everything about playing football and still would have if he could have. He couldn’t run around as much as he used to, but you could see the quality he had.

“As a striker myself, it was great to learn from someone like him who has done so much in the game.”
