MICHAEL Flynn would love to welcome Antoine Semenyo back to Newport County AFC in January if the opportunity arises.

Semenyo was a big hit during his loan spell at Rodney Parade last season, scoring six goals in 32 appearances before being recalled in January amid reported interest from Chelsea.

Big things are expected of the 19-year-old striker at his parent club Bristol City but he’s made just nine appearances in the all competitions for the Robins this season.

And manager Lee Johnson admits Semenyo could be considered for another loan stint in January.

"In terms of [his] long-term future at the football club, it's one I'm really excited about,” said Johnson.

“[But], if you're not in the squad and you haven't been making benches and stuff like that, everyone wants to play football.”

Flynn has said that he is looking for goalscorers in January and Semenyo would fit the bill.

“I don’t know if he’s a possibility, but he’s somebody that I’d love to have back,” said the Exiles boss. “I wanted to keep him here [in January] but it was out of my hands.

“We’re trying. We’re talking to all the local clubs – Bristol City, Swansea, Cardiff, everyone.”

Flynn has also looked at free agents to plug some holes in his squad but he failed in an audacious bid to lure Joe Ledley to Rodney Parade.

The Wales international midfielder agreed a short-term deal with Charlton Athletic last week.

“I’ve looked at one or two free agents but nothing materialised,” said Flynn.

“Look at Joe Ledley; he’s got a move to a Championship club. That’s what we’re up against.

“We had a few text messages but you can’t blame him – he’s got a Championship club.

“I always knew it was a very slim chance. I’d say the only chance we had was because of the location.

“But he obviously wants to try to get back into the Welsh squad and he’s got to think of him and his family.

“And, let’s be honest, if you had a choice between playing for Charlton in the Championship or Newport County in League Two, who are you going to choose?"
