NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn is working hard to “freshen up” his squad in the January transfer window but it’s unlikely that any new faces will arrive in time for tomorrow’s FA Cup trip to Millwall.

Flynn has stated that there will be arrivals and departures at Rodney Parade this month and he’s already discussing a number of deals, with a striker one of his main targets.

“I’m non-stop on my phone,” said the Exiles boss at this morning’s pre-match press conference ahead of the third-round tie at The Den.

“There may be some progress but I doubt there’ll be anything done before the Millwall game.

“We might get one or two boxed off, but not in time for the game.

“If the right player comes available, who I think can strengthen the squad, then I’ll look to bring them in.

“We need to freshen it up a little bit. But it won’t be mass changes, not at all. It’ll just be a little freshen up.

“We’ve got some funds to work with,” he confirmed.

“We might have to extend the loans of one or two and maybe get one or two out as well to bump that up, but there will be a small pot available.

“We’ve made probably around the £500,000 mark this season from TV revenue and cup runs.”

Asked about the presence of Swansea City defender Brandon Cooper at the New Year’s Day clash with Cheltenham Town was significant, Flynn said: “Not at the moment, because Swansea are struggling in the centre-half positions.”

Former Swans striker Wilfried Bony, who is still without a club after leaving the Liberty Stadium last May, is back training with County at Spytty Park today.

Meanwhile, Saikou Janneh has returned to Bristol City after his Torquay United loan ended.

The striker was targeted by Flynn in the summer and the Robins are reported to be close to tying up a league loan for him.
