MANAGER Michael Flynn says Newport County AFC will be aiming for a win in tomorrow’s Leasing.com Trophy clash with MK Dons before going “hell for leather” in League Two after bowing out of the FA Cup.
County were beaten 3-0 at Championship side Millwall on Saturday to exit the cup at the third-round stage but there is little time to dwell on what Flynn said was a frustrating defeat at The Den.
The Exiles can seal a place in the area semi-finals of the Trophy with a win over League One strugglers MK Dons at Rodney Parade tomorrow (kick-off 7.30pm) and Flynn intends to pick a strong team.
“The FA Cup is done now and we’ll concentrate on MK Dons on Tuesday and then we’ve got to go hell for leather in the league,” he said.
“I’ll have a look at it (team selection). There’s a chance for one or two to come in but we want to start winning and we’ll give it a good go on Tuesday.
Mark O’Brien returned from concussion to start at Millwall, while Lewis Collins and Corey Whitely (above) came off the bench.
And centre-back Kyle Howkins, who hasn’t played since suffering a broken cheekbone in the FA Cup win at Maldon & Tiptree in November, is likely to feature tomorrow.
“Lewis is back from illness, Corey’s back, Mark O’Brien is back and Mickey [Demetriou] has now played a few games in a row,” added Flynn.
“And Kyle will be ready as of Monday so it’s a lot more positive and you can feel the competition for places coming back again.”
Asked about the return of loan player Taylor Maloney to his parent club Charlton Athletic on Friday, Flynn said: “I think it was a mutual decision.
“He’s a great young lad and he’s got a future in front of him, as long as he takes on board the things that he needs to work on.”
Flynn is also hoping to add to his squad this week.
“I was on the phone in the hotel before the game trying to get one or two things to come through and I was on the phone all the way back as well,” he said.
“Hopefully we’ll have something done by Tuesday.”
Meanwhile, a 2-1 win for Walsall at Salford City saw County drop to 15th in the League Two table on Saturday.
They are now 11 points below seventh-placed Forest Green Rovers with three games in hand.
One of those games in hand – away at fifth-placed Cheltenham Town – has been provisionally rearranged for Tuesday, January 21, at 7.45pm.
But the new date is subject to change if County beat MK Dons tomorrow.
