THE visit of League Two leaders Swindon Town to Rodney Parade this Saturday should hold no fears for Newport County if they show the same fighting spirit that earned three points in Scunthorpe.

Striker Jamille Matt, who came off the bench to draw the Exiles level at Glanford Park before Padraig Amond’s winner just four minutes later, knows the Robins will present County with a big challenge.

But after helping his side end their 10-game winless streak in the league, Matt feels that County are more than capable of doing the double over Richie Wellens’ men

Goals from Matt and Mark O’Brien sealed a 2-0 win at the County Ground late last September, at which point the Exiles were flying high near the top of the division.

Matt’s team will go into the weekend’s clash 20 points behind Swindon and 11 adrift of the play-offs – Forest Green Rovers in seventh are on the same total as third-placed Cheltenham Town.

Looking ahead to the Swindon test, Matt said: “It’s a tough game next weekend against the league leaders, but we’re a good team.

“We didn’t go on that bad run because we’re a bad team, so as long as we can click again I’m sure we can do the same thing.

“It was a good performance when we played Swindon at their place.

“Obviously they’ve been on a run since, so we know it’s a tough game, we’re under no illusions about that.

“But if we believe in ourselves and use the confidence we got from turning around the game (at Scunthorpe) then I’m sure we can get another three points.”

Reflecting on that much-needed triumph last weekend, Matt added: “It has been a long time coming for the boys and everyone connected with the club.

“But I think the signs have been there in the last couple of weeks, and with the boys winning on Tuesday (in the Leasing.com Trophy) as well.

“It’s good to get that league win under our belt and hopefully there are many more to come.

“I hope it’s a turning point, but only time will tell.

“We’re keeping our feet on the ground, it’s just the one win.

“We’ve done the double over them, which is always nice, and they’re a team that was in the division above last season.

“We’ve just got to try and build on that now.”

He continued: “We’ve probably had most of the play in a lot of the games we’ve played recently without getting the rub of the green.

“In some of the games we’ve had spells of pressure but the ball hasn’t fallen for us in the right place.

“I thought both goals (against Scunthorpe) fell for us in the right place and at the right time.

“I’m happy to get a goal and Podge as well to make sure we got the three points, that’s the most important thing.”

On ending that unwanted run without a league win, Matt said: “It hurts no-one more than the players because it’s our profession and we take pride in that.

“We come in every day and work very hard to try and get wins, not just be a professional footballer.

“It’s about getting results and it hurts us the most when we’re not getting results.

“You go home and you’re miserable after not getting a win or being on a bad run.

“The boys can go home and be happy after that result.

“We have got character in the team and we’ve still got a few boys to come back, so it all bodes well going forward.”
