NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn is not getting carried away after Saturday’s much-needed win over Bradford City, but he wants to see his side continue to climb the League Two table this week.

First half strikes from defenders Ryan Inniss and Scot Bennett earned saw County fight back from a goal down to beat the Bantams at Rodney Parade and ended the club’s seven-and-a-half-hour goal drought in league games.

The three points lifted Flynn’s men to 15th in the table and they can climb to 10th with victory at Grimsby Town tomorrow – the first of three games in hand on the seven teams directly above them.

“I’m delighted for the players and for the fans,” said the Exiles boss.

“Our confidence was shot because everyone was going on about the [lack of] goals.

“I don’t want to get carried away now and I don’t want to be too pessimistic.

“We’ve got 14 games to go and it’s about little steps now.

“We’ve got a tough one on Tuesday. We’ve got two long trips [to Grimsby tomorrow and Oldham Athletic next Saturday] and it will be good to get at least three points out of those two.”

Speaking after last week’s Leasing.com Trophy semi-final shootout defeat to Salford City, Flynn warned his players that he would not tolerate anyone taking their foot off the gas and he was pleased with their reaction on Saturday.

“This result will boost the players’ confidence because it has been tough,” he admitted.

“But they don’t get too up when they win and they don’t get too down when they lose – they are a fantastic group.

“The players I bring to the football club have got the interest of the club at heart. There are no prima donnas. If they don’t buy into what we’re trying to do, I can’t have them here. We’ve all got to be on the same page.

“I said it after Wednesday, but it wasn’t a threat,” added Flynn.

“There is always that chance that you become complacent or down and you start feeling sorry for yourself but none of them did that [on Saturday].

“We had people like Podge (Padraig Amond) on the bench but we’re going to have to make changes over the next few weeks because there are a lot of games in a short space of time and a lot of travelling as well.”

Captain Joss Labadie missed the win over Bradford with a sore foot but he and left-back George Nurse could be available to face Grimsby.

“We had six out this weekend and two or three of them are done for the season,” said Flynn.

“The right-backs are out but Nick Townsend could come back just before the end of the season.

“The other three, I’m hoping will be back soon. George and Joss, I’m hoping will be ready for Tuesday. The other one (Mark O’Brien) will probably be another two weeks.”
