NEWPORT County AFC's season may have been stopped in its tracks by coronavirus pandemic but Argus readers still get their annual chance to honour their top performer.

With 10 games left to play in their League Two campaign, voting is open for the Exiles' player of the year and six of Michael Flynn's squad are in the running for the award.

Left-back Ryan Haynes, utility man Scot Bennett, midfielders Josh Sheehan and Joss Labadie, striker Padraig Amond and goalkeeper Tom King are the candidates after strong campaigns for the club.

This week we have given the lowdown on the nominees in the running for the honour, which was won last season by Irish forward Amond. Today’s candidates is RYAN HAYNES

Haynes arrived last summer from Shrewsbury on a two-year deal as a replacement for Dan Butler, whose performances had earned a jump to League One with Peterborough.

The new man settled swiftly, impressing with his dynamism going forward and solidity when helping the Exiles’ defence start the season in mean fashion.

Haynes went on to make 40 appearances and thumped in a cracker to clinch a win at Forest Green Rovers in August, picking up possession from a quick free-kick down the right and catching out Lewis Thomas with a low drive.

The 24-year-old has made an impression in his first campaign in amber.

“He had big shoes to fill in replacing Dan Butler, who was a key man for three seasons,” said Argus football writer Andrew Penman.

“It was a big task but Haynes started the season really, really well with lots of assists – his delivery into the box created plenty of chances.

“He is a very attack-minded left-back and although his form tailed off a little bit from the start of the season, when he was very good, he was an important member of the team.”
