LENNIE Lawrence has left the Newport County AFC management team to join League Two strugglers Stevenage.

The 72-year-old was with the Exiles as a management consultant, providing guidance for boss Michael Flynn.

The veteran manager will now head to Stevenage, who are bottom of the table, to carry out a similar role with Alex Revell.

Lawrence arrived at Rodney Parade in March 2017 to lend a helping hand to novice caretaker boss Flynn.

His pearls of wisdom helped County to secure their great escape from relegation, claim a number of FA Cup scalps and make it to the final of the League Two play-offs last year.

“I would like to thank Lennie for all the support and advice he has provided in the three years we have worked together,” said Flynn.

“We have enjoyed some amazing times. I would like to wish him well for the future. He will always be a very valued friend to me.”

Former Cardiff boss Lawrence racked up 1,100 games as a manager and a further 600 as an assistant.

Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace said: "Lennie is one of the most experienced individuals in the game.

"We are delighted he’s agreed to becoming involved day to day in the re-shaping of the first team, working with Alex and helping develop him as a young manager.

"Over the last decade Lennie has worked with and improved a number of successful managers including Paul Trollope, Dougie Freeman and Michael Flynn.

"We believe this appointment is a positive step in helping us rebuild to gain success on the pitch."

Lawrence will take up his role either at the resumption of the current campaign or start of next season.

Stevenage are currently bottom of the table and are waiting to learn their fate after the EFL rejected League Two clubs' suggestion of scrapping relegation, with National League champions Barrow coming up after the demise of Bury.

Stevenage are three points behind Macclesfield Town, who have already been docked 11 points and have been hit by fresh charges over late payment of wages.

A club statement read: "Macclesfield Town can confirm that notification has been received from the English Football League, which charges the club with further regulation breaches - all of which are relating to the payment of salaries due at the end of March 2020."

The club say they are "deeply surprised" by the charges and intend to appeal them "vehemently".
