Newport County ask for fans' financial help after early ending

The Exiles’ campaign is over after clubs in the fourth tier of the English Football League voted unanimously to not resume 2019/20.

Michael Flynn’s side last played on March 10 when they lost at Carlisle and finished 14th in the table, leapfrogging Grimsby on points per game.

They had 10 games left with Colchester, Northampton, Grimsby and Forest Green Rovers meant to visit Rodney Parade while away games at Stevenage, Crawley, Cheltenham, Salford, Crewe and Port Vale were scratched.

All professional sporting organisations are feeling the pinch because of the coronavirus pandemic and County have asked for help from their fans.

“The club appreciates season ticket holders for 2019/20 will miss four home matches as a result of the decision to end the season,” read a statement.

“However, season ticket holders will be aware the savings received for purchasing a season ticket compared to buying a match day ticket for each home fixture amount to more than four ‘free’ matches a season.

“The actual savings vary based on ticket type but, as a guideline, tickets purchased during the ‘early bird’ renewal period last year saved, on average, the cost of nine games while those purchasing during the ‘general sale’ period saved the equivalent of seven match tickets.

“With this in mind, and with finances uncertain for all professional football clubs ahead of decisions regarding the 2020-21 season, the club would hope season ticket holders do not feel the need to request refunds.”

The Exiles do, however, acknowledge that supporters may also be struggling financially and will still arrange refunds with those that want them, with the same applying to those that bought individual match tickets in advance.

“These are difficult economic times for everyone, club and supporter alike,” read the statement.

“We know many of you will be struggling and the club’s board has been reviewing its budgets and cashflow forecasts on a regular basis to take account of both the uncertainty over the end of the 2019/20 season, and the likelihood of a significant period of the 2020/21 season being played behind closed doors.

“The club would once again like to thank all our fantastic supporters for their continued backing during these difficult times. Please stay safe.”

Swindon have been confirmed as champions with Crewe and Plymouth also promoted.

Cheltenham, Exeter, Colchester and Northampton will contest the play-offs with the first games on June 18 while there will also be relegation to the National League, with either Stevenage or Macclesfield dropping down.

Tranmere, Southend and Bolton have been relegated from League One with Barrow set to come up from the National League.

Forest Green Rovers owner Dale Vince said that he hopes the new season will start in September but it has been suggested that fans won't be back in the stands until 2021.
