SCOT Bennett has signed a one-year contract to stay with Newport County just a month after being left without a club.

The utility man had expected to be with a fresh team in 2020/21 after County announced they were unable to offer fresh deals because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Manager Michael Flynn had told the 29-year-old in January that he wanted him to stay but a new contract was not sealed and then the Covid-19 crisis led to a recruitment and retention freeze at Rodney Parade.

The situation led to fellow key figure Jamille Matt being snapped up by League Two rivals Forest Green Rovers.

However, after an uncertain few months, Bennett has now signed up to remain with County

"I am delighted we’ve been able to get the deal finalised. Over the last few seasons, my family have really settled in the area and I am very happy that will continue,” said Bennett, who also had to postpone his wedding because of the pandemic.

“I would like to thank the supporters for their support, I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to be back playing now.”

Free Press Series: Bennett made 37 appearances last season before the pandemic led to the suspension of League Two in March and then an early finish.

He told the Argus in July that he was hopeful of staying in the Football League.

"A lot of clubs will be waiting until the EFL come out with a start date for the new season and then they will wait until that's close before they start trying to make any signings.

"I had a good season so hopefully that will work in my favour. I have played a lot of games in the Football League, so I am hoping that will help me when my name starts getting around."

"I'm still only 29 so feel that I have got a good few years left in me yet."

Flynn is relieved that he will still be able to call on the dependable Cornishman, who can play in defence or midfield.

Flynn said: “I am extremely pleased to get the deal over the line. He is an important player for this squad and one that I know that I can rely on.

“He’s also a great fit, both on and off the field, and it those qualities that will be a massive boost for our group.”

The re-signing of Bennett provides a lift after the retirement of defender Mark O'Brien because of a heart issue.
