MARK O’Brien was given a spot in the front row of Newport County AFC’s squad photo but isn’t yet officially part of the Exiles’ backroom team.

The popular defender was forced to retire this summer at the age of 27 after a check-up on an existing heart condition revealed that he needed surgery.

O’Brien went under the knife and is on the road to recovery, with County helping in the adjustment to being a former footballer.

The Irishman was invited to watch the squad’s preparations for the season and was iFollow co-commentator for the Exiles’ Carabao Cup win against Swansea City and EFL Trophy loss to Cheltenham Town.

He then was on the front row of County's team photo along with manager Flynn and his right-hand man Wayne Hatswell.

Flynn told the Argus last month that he will provide assistance if O’Brien, who played 127 times for the club, wants to stay involved in the game.

The manager reiterated that after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe in the League Two opener.

“He’s still working his way back to full health but we want him around,” said Flynn. “We hold him in high esteem and he is somebody that I think can add something to the group once he is fit and ready.”

County face Cambridge United in the second round of the Carabao Cup this evening (kick-off 7pm) with the winners progressing to play either Oxford or Watford.
