MICHAEL Flynn insists he won’t get carried away and declare a promotion push despite Newport County AFC ‘showing their mettle’ for three more points on the road.

The Exiles have responded to a narrow defeat at Cambridge United with a pair of 1-0 successes against Tranmere Rovers and Stevenage Borough.

They triumphed at Stevenage on Tuesday evening thanks to a Tristan Abrahams penalty after eight minutes, defending with concentration to seal the spoils at the Lamex Stadium.

It was a win that kept them second in the table, level on points with Cambridge, and Flynn’s side have won five of seven fixtures to prompt hopes of a push for League One.

The manager, however, is staying grounded ahead of Saturday’s trip to one of his former clubs Bradford City.

“The season is only seven games old. I am not getting carried away,” said Flynn, who led the club to the 2019 play-off final.

“We have had a very good start and have had a good Carabao Cup run as well, it’s been a good start but that is it.

“I’d like to think we can do well but I am not going to get carried away and say we will do. It’s only seven games and it’s a good start.

“There are a few others, Cheltenham, Cambridge, who have started well so it will be tough.”

County secured a single goal success for the fourth time in the early days of the League Two campaign with Flynn acknowledging the need to develop a ruthless edge when on top.

“It was a bit scrappy in the second half but Stevenage are fighting for their lives and are really having a go for their manager,” he said. “They are strong with some good players but we should have killed the game off.

“First half we were very good, we just needed a bit more in the final third, but then in the second half we showed our mettle because everything was thrown at us and there were some questionable decisions, which I won’t go into.

“I thought that we were solid and had some really good passing movements to get into the final third.

“We’ve just got to kill them off. Them hitting the bar in the first few minutes woke us up because after that we were brilliant in the first half.”

Stevenage enjoyed some spells of pressure after the break but were limited to a single shot on target, when goalkeeper Nick Townsend got down well to deny dangerman Jack Aitchison.

The Exiles’ back three of Brandon Cooper, Matty Dolan and Mickey Demetriou once again impressed but Flynn stressed it was a team effort.

He said: “The boys were disciplined and put their bodies on the line when they needed to. They are a team that are really fighting for each other, and that’s what good teams do.

“Manchester United didn’t win all those titles by just being pretty – they dug in when they needed to. With Liverpool you see the amount of hard work that their top strikers do. Manchester City, Barcelona, they all work hard first.”
