SCOTT Twine may have missed out on being League Two's player of October but the in-form Newport County AFC midfielder is in the running for goal of the month.

The 21-year-old has made a stunning start to life at Rodney Parade, so good that County supporters fear Swindon may recall him from his loan in January.

Twine has helped the Exiles set the pace in League Two and he was nominated for player of the month after three goals and two assists.

He missed out on that honour โ€“ Cambridge striker Paul Mullin was rewarded for eight goals, including a double against County โ€“ but the Exiles midfielder could still land a gong.

Twine has been nominated for his long-range effort against Cambridge on October 10, when he slammed the ball in from 25 yards at the Abbey Stadium.

"I had some space and I just thought โ€˜why not?โ€™ and thankfully it went in," said Twine afterwards.

"I got the ball on the half-turn and I think their midfielder was five-yards away from me, so I thought โ€˜if I get a bit of space here then Iโ€™ll shoot.โ€™

"That was probably the best goal Iโ€™ve ever scored in a competitive game since turning professional."

The Exiles dangerman repeated the trick with a superb long-range goal against Colchester at Rodney Parade, while his thumping strike against Cambridge in the Carabao Cup in September means he could dominate the Exilesโ€™ goal of the season competition.

Twine will be up against Oldhamโ€™s Zak Dearnley for his clipped finish against Carlisle and George Nurse, who won Countyโ€™s goal of the season in 2019/20, for his run and finish for Walsall against Bradford at Valley Parade.
