NEWPORT County AFC’s promotion-driven squad will ensure January’s FA Cup clash doesn’t derail their League Two campaign, insists boss Michael Flynn.

The Exiles will learn their opposition in round three of the famous competition on Monday night, with the Premier League and Championship clubs entering the fray.

It is the fourth season on the bounce that County have made it to the third stage – in 2018 they stunned Leeds, the following year they upset Leicester City and last season they suffered defeat at Millwall.

However, that knockout encounter on the weekend of January 9 – which will lead to the postponement of the trip to Cheltenham – is preceded by nine League Two fixtures.

County are setting the pace with 29 points from a possible 39 and resume their promotion push on Tuesday night at the New Lawn.

“We’ve got Forest Green away now and it’s going to be a tough one because they have started well,” said Flynn after Saturday’s 3-0 win against Salford. “They are always there or thereabouts in the top half, so it will be a difficult game.

“There will be no let-up, I’ve got a great bunch of lads and they have just shown that we’ve got a good squad as well.

“They are a good group and that’s what we have worked towards behind the scenes, to get the right characters in.”

Flynn has a choice of formation to make for the short midweek trip after swapping from a 3-5-2 to a 4-5-1 at the start of the Salford clash.

He also has welcome selection headaches after the influential Matty Dolan was given a break from the matchday squad and a strong bench featured Nick Townsend, Ashley Baker, Joss Labadie, Tristan Abrahams, Saikou Janneh, Padraig Amond and Kevin Ellison.
