THE unpredictability of Newport County AFC wildcard Saikou Janneh will boost the League Two leaders in their pivotal December, believes boss Michael Flynn.

The on-loan Bristol City forward made his return to action in Saturday’s 3-0 win against Salford in round two of the FA Cup.

Janneh came on early in the second half and was denied by a superb save before slamming home a superb goal in injury time after jinking into the box.

The 20-year-old was just showing signs of his talent with the pace-setting Exiles in October when he suffered a hamstring injury when chasing a long ball in Bradford.

Thankfully the damage wasn’t severe and after a month out the lively Janneh is back to provide Flynn with a selection headache up front at fellow high-flyers Forest Green Rovers this evening (kick-off 7pm) along with fellow forwards Tristan Abrahams, Jamie Proctor and Padraig Amond.

“We wanted to get some minutes into Saikou and the physio was telling me that he could only have 45 minutes maximum against Salford,” said Flynn. “We got as much as we could out of him, and he should have had two goals.

“He’s a fantastic lad and a great character. He’s always got a smile on his face and is great with the other players.

“He is unpredictable and that’s not a bad thing to be – he has got a bright future.”

Janneh scored the final goal after Amond had secured the win with a penalty and Proctor had headed home the opener.

It was Proctor’s first goal since arriving on loan from Championship club Rotherham on deadline day and Flynn was pleased for the striker, who provides a physical option while Ryan Taylor is on the comeback trail from a hamstring injury.

“Jamie has been a little bit frustrated,” admitted the manager. “One or two things just haven’t come off for him but that was a fantastic header.

“He just cushioned it back across from where it came from and it was a great ball by Robbie Willmott. That just set us on the way.”

Proctor’s influence isn’t just on the field with the 28-year-old forward, who counts Bradford, Bolton, Preston, Scunthorpe and Fleetwood among his past clubs, also using his experience to help out Janneh.

"I'd love to be able to help a young player like Saikou to come through the early stages of his career because that's invaluable," said Proctor in October.

"I've been at so many clubs and played so many games, so it's the arm around the shoulder, the experience and knowhow of getting through Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday.

"That's something that you only learn as you get older, so hopefully the experience that I've got will play a big part."

County face nine League Two fixtures before their FA Cup round three tie on January 9.
