BOSS Michael Flynn says the "penny has got to drop" with his Newport County AFC side after their wasteful streak continued at Forest Green.

The Exiles are still setting the pace in League Two thanks to a hard-earned point at the New Lawn against rivals who are also targeting a promotion push.

County took the lead when Tristan Abrahams scored from the penalty spot just before half-time but were pegged back after 77 minutes when Jamille Matt, who left Rodney Parade in the summer after the club could not offer a fresh contract because of financial uncertainty in the coronavirus pandemic, slotted home.

A point was a good return against a side that started the evening in fourth place but manager Flynn made a familiar complaint afterwards.

"We missed too many good chances. We had the best chances and the goal that we conceded went through Brandon Cooper's legs, so it was a little bit fortunate," he said.

"But they are a good team and I am not one of those managers who will say that everything was down to our errors; Forest Green are a good team and played some good stuff during a period in the second half.

"But we've got to be more ruthless, I have just spent my time in the changing room talking about that because I am getting sick and tired of it.

"We are missing too many opportunities to kill the game. That's what really good teams do – they kill the opposition off."

Flynn has rotated his forwards throughout the season but has frequently grumbled about missed opportunities, even after victories.

Forest Green also blew openings and former County forward Aaron Collins twice was denied by goalkeeper Nick Townsend blocks.

However, Flynn was able to point to missed headers from close-range by Jamie Proctor and Matty Dolan in the opening stages, wasted opportunities on the counter by Abrahams and sub Saikou Janneh and a golden chance late on for Scott Twine when he failed to hook the ball on target from six yards out.

"The penny has got to drop with them. We've had the better chances, it's a simple as that," said Flynn.

"It didn't matter who we put out there, when we had the opportunities we made the wrong choices.

"Twiney has got to go across the 'keeper, Tristan is trying to open up on his left foot, we have got to hit the target with free headers, Proctor has got to score early in the second half.

"It's frustrating but we have gone away from home, worked extremely hard and got a point. Would we have taken a point before the game?

"Possibly, because on their day Forest Green will spank somebody, but so should we."

"It's gone now, done and dusted, and we have got a really tough game on Saturday against Morecambe."
