SUCCESSFUL teams need piano shifters and piano players. Scot Bennett knows which category he falls into.

Newport County AFC sit top of League Two, enjoyed a run in the Carabao Cup thanks to upsets against Swansea and Watford and have an FA Cup tie against Premier League Brighton to look forward to in January.

Their strong start to the season has come after shift in style with manager Michael Flynn making a summer decision to move midfielder Matty Dolan to the middle of three centre-backs.

County have built from the back and impressed with the ball on the deck, with Josh Sheehan's form when pulling the strings earning a first Wales cap.

The Exiles also have Scott Twine and Jamie Devitt as creative midfielders while wing-backs Liam Shephard and Ryan Haynes have thrived when bombing forward.

But not everyone can be regulars on the highlights reel and Scot Bennett has impressed in the last two outings with the task of 'get ball, give ball'.

"I know what I am there for! I am there for the dirty work," said the midfielder, who can also slot into defence.

"I am there to get the ball back and give it to the likes of 'Sheesey'; I try to help out at the back and get forward if I can.

"I will keep doing what i do best. I am happy to be in the background and let others have the limelight.

"I'll do the dirty work and let them get all the applause; they deserve it because they have been on fire this season. You can't complain when you have players like that around you."

Bennett had an uncertain summer after County were not in a position to offer fresh terms because of financial uncertainty caused by coronavirus.

The 30-year-old Cornishman signed a new deal in pre-season but after being a key figure in 2019/20 has had to bide his time.

"It was a bit frustrating, I had an injury at the start of the season and couldn't complain about not playing because the lads have been on fire," said Bennett.

"I'm always ready to play if needed and to get back in for the last two games and play 90 minutes was good.

"The gaffer pulled me aside ahead of the Forest Green game and said he had been happy with me against Salford and he wanted me to do the same things.

"If you do well then he puts his faith in you, so you can't complain."

County beat Salford 3-0 in the FA Cup and then had to settle for a draw at Forest Green after Tristan Abrahams' penalty was cancelled out by former Exiles striker Jamille Matt after 77 minutes.

A point at fellow promotion hopefuls is not to be sniffed at but Bennett & Co will want a maximum haul against 11th-placed Morecambe at Rodney Parade tomorrow.

"We were frustrated at Forest Green because we created enough chances to win the game," said Bennett.

"But it's a tough place to go and they are not a bad side so we took the point and move on to Saturday when we can hopefully get three.

"We've always had tough games against Morecambe but will go into it with confidence."

County have won six of their seven League Two fixtures on home soil after being denied by Walsall last time out.

Morecambe are fresh from a 1-0 win against Barrow and have their own mouthwatering FA Cup tie, a trip to Chelsea, on the horizon.
