FORMER Newport County AFC striker Jamille Matt has been nominated for the League Two player of the season award.

The 31-year-old has spearheaded the Gloucestershire side’s push for promotion after leaving Rodney Parade last summer, when the coronavirus pandemic meant the Exiles were unable to offer a contract extension.

Matt scored 16 goals – including a strike in both games against his former County teammates – until a nasty hand injury ended his campaign, and hit Rovers’ hopes of heading up via the play-offs.

Forest Green are sixth and Newport are seventh ahead of this evening's fixtures.

The targetman is underdog for the League Two honour with Paul Mullin likely to win the award after firing Cambridge to the brink of promotion with 29 goals.

The U’s creative midfielder Wes Hoolahan is the other contender on the three-man shortlist with the winner announced at the EFL awards on Sky Sports on Thursday.
