NEWPORT County AFC won’t profit from facing a partied-out Cheltenham Town on Saturday, with Robins boss Michael Duff declaring the celebrations can wait another week.

The Gloucestershire side secured an automatic promotion for the first time in their history on Tuesday night with a 1-1 draw against Carlisle.

Cheltenham have guaranteed a top-three finish but still want to win the title with the leaders enjoying a two-point lead over Cambridge United, with Bolton another point back.

The Robins enjoyed their feat at Whaddon Road in midweek but Duff encouraged his squad to leave the wild stuff until a week on Saturday.

“I said to them when I finally got them in the dressing room, don't with 10 days to go, toss it away now,” he said to GloucestershireLive.

“If they want to drink they can drink as much as they want from May 8 to the middle of June if they want. That's the time to party and celebrate.

“We came in for pre-season and it's a long time ago. For 10 more days it's not worth it.

“We have total carte blanche now to go and express ourselves, with total freedom to try and win the league. That's what we'll be trying to do.”

Chris Hussey, whose free-kick earned the point that earned promotion, backed up Duff’s words.

"We'll enjoy tonight, but we'll be back in on Thursday and the gaffer will be after us, so we'll go after the title," he said during the promotion party.

County could do with Cheltenham letting their standards slip this weekend when they aim to stay in control of their play-off destiny.

The sixth-placed Exiles have a two-point lead over Forest Green Rovers and Exeter, who have a superior goal difference, are another point back.

Seventh-placed Salford head to Colchester this weekend, Forest Green host fifth-placed Tranmere and Exeter travel to third-placed Bolton.
