NEWPORT County AFC face a nervous wait to see if captain Joss Labadie will be able to lead their bid for League Two play-off glory.

The midfielder was forced off in the second half of the 1-1 draw at Southend that clinched a semi-final clash with Forest Green Rovers.

The skipper was caught between bodies and immediately called for help after being caught around his left knee.

Labadie hobbled off the field with his leg bandaged but manager Michael Flynn revealed it was a gruesome injury.

“It’s not good and he’s got to go to Southend hospital and possibly have an operation,” said the boss.

“It was such and innocuous injury and the stud went through the skin and they couldn’t stop the bleeding – it looked like it went through the muscle.

“I am hoping that it’s not too deep because if that’s the case then he will be available for the play-offs, if it’s deep then he is done for the season.

“He is a little bit down but fingers crossed it will be good news and he’ll be back with us as soon as possible.”

If Labadie is out then Flynn will have to change his team after naming the same starters for five games on the spin.

He could recall Matty Dolan, who came on for the captain, either as a midfielder or at the heart of the defence with Scot Bennett moving forward.

Labadie has been a leading figure in the run-in and scored the only goal of the vital win against champions Cheltenham on the penultimate weekend.
