JOSH Sheehan is reportedly heading up to League One despite his play-off anguish with Newport County AFC after signing for Bolton Wanderers.
The 26-year-old playmaker has been linked with a move to the north west of England on a free transfer after the end of his Exiles contract with suggestions he is having a medical today.
County have been resigned to his departure for some time - his talent would be wasted with another campaign in League Two - and last summer Bristol Rovers made a bid for him but failed to hit his buyout clause.
Sheehan came through the ranks at Swansea City and spent a season on loan at County in 2016/17 before turning on a permanent deal in January 2018 after recovering from a serious knee injury.
The midfielder quickly became a key figure at Rodney Parade and enjoyed a stellar 2020/21, pulling the strings for County from a deep role to earn selection in the PFA’s League Two team of the year.
His exploits earned a first Wales cap against the USA in November and he also came off the bench in the win against Mexico in March.
Sheehan helped County to a top-seven finish and he captained them to a play-off semi-final win against Forest Green.
He then played the full 120 minutes in the agonising and controversial loss to Morecambe at Wembley.
Sheehan didn't earn promotion to League One but is going to test himself at a higher level with the Trotters, and push for more Wales honours after missing out on selection for the Euros.
