YOU may be mistaken for thinking these pictures are taken from a scene in a new blockbuster, shot on location in some remote part of Canada and on a multi-million pound budget – but you’d be wrong.

These are scenes from a new sci-fi shot film, produced by a pair of Torfaen filmmakers and shot on location in wintry Abersychan and Garndiffaith.

The film, called The Return, is about isolation and ambition, and was produced by Andy Toovey from Garndiffiath and Joe O’Hare from Cwmbran.

Graphic designer turned film maker, Mr Toovey, 28, wrote and directed the piece, along with Mr O’Hare, 29, who is currently on a film course.

Mr Toovey said: “We started off working on a comedy about an entrepreneur, but it wasn’t working out.

“Luckily for us, when the snowcame it sparked a new idea, so we shelved the previous project and decided to film an epic adventure instead.”

The main day of filming was on January 18, when the heaviest snow fell.

Mr Toovey said: “We filmed by the former British Iron Works, and we really had to wrap up warm.

“I think I had two pairs of trousers on, four jumpers and numerous pairs of socks, but it was great fun.”

The film features mainly landscapes around Abersychan.

He said: “Towards the close of the film, a futuristic city dome is seen covering Garndiffaith.

“Fortunately you don’t need planning permission for CGI, as I’m not too sure Torfaen council would have approved.”

The three-minute film was created as an entry into the Reed short film competition.

Entrants are awaiting a shortlist of the best 12 films, before the winners are announced at a BAFTA awards ceremony in May.
