LLANTARNAM School choir past and present members are to unite for a one-off performance.

The school’s Senior Choir ran for 21 years, directed and conducted by Geraint Davies.

Former Llantarnam School pupils, Rhianwen Bailey and Nicola Nicola De Gare Pitt, have worked hard to contact choir members from over the years to join together to perform.

Ms Bailey, 27, said: “For choir members, it was a highlight of our years in school and so when I posted on Facebook about the possibility of organising a reunion concert, a lot of people showed an interest.

“We are likely to have a choir of upwards of 80 past members, from throughout the life of the choir.”

With some of the past choir members reaching their 40s, people are travelling from all over the country to be able to attend.

In the 21 years, the senior choir has recorded four CDs, enjoyed seven tours abroad, sang in places such as Barcelona Cathedral, St Marks in Venice and the National Eistedfodd, performed on the radio and done many charity performances.

Mr Davies put a lot of effort into running the choir with a minimum of two weekly rehearsals for students, as well as lunchtimes, evenings and weekends.

Many members of the choir have gone on to careers in music, including Mark Hill, better known as The Artful Dodger, and composer Jack White, who had a work premiered on Radio 3 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

The upcoming concert will be held on March 31 at 7.30pm at the Parkway Hotel, Cwmbran.

It will be held as a memorial concert for former deputy headteacher at the school, Barrie Shankland, who died earlier this year.

The proceeds from the concert will be going to the charities of his choice, the RNLI and the British Heart Foundation.

Tickets are priced at £7 and £5 for concessions.

They can be purchased from choir members, or call 01633 484625.
