A 15 year old from Cwmbran has had her long locks shaved off after being inspired by her granddad to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK.
Nicole Carmock decided to have her hair shaved off to raise funds for the charity as her granddad, Len Burbridge, 68, has the condition.
Mr Burbidge, from Pontypool, is the chairman of the Abergavenny Branch of Parkinson’s UK and raises funds himself for the charity, and says he is proud of Miss Carmock for wanting to support the charity too.
Her sponsored head shave took place on Saturday, and at 12noon a crowd of around 15 people watched as hairdressers at Ice Hair and Beauty on Victoria Street started shaving.
Mr Burbridge said: “I was very supportive of her decision to have her head shaved but it was also very emotional for me.
“It’s a big thing for her to do as she had beautiful long hair that she would change to different colours and styles, but she wanted to fundraise for the charity.”
The sponsorship money is still being counted but Miss Carmock hopes to have reached her target of £1,000.
Parkinson’s is a degenerative neurological condition which robs people of control of their bodies.
The main symptoms of the condition are tremor, slowness of movement and rigidity and these can only get worse over time.
There currently is no cure.
The funds raised will allow Parkinson’s UK to continue with their vital research work to find a cure, and improve the lives of the 127,000 people who are living with Parkinson’s in the UK.
