A FORMER Olympic torch bearer from Torfaen who has spent the last 15 years trying to improve disability sport has received a British Empire Medal on Monday.
Graeme Knowles, 59, was recognised for voluntary service to disabled adults and children through swimming and football in the area.
His 26-year-old son Andrew, who has learning difficulties, was a Welsh disabled swimming champion three times, including in 2006.
The dad-of-six currently chairs Gwent Dolphins Disability Swimming Club and has helped with the running of football teams for disabled players in Torfaen.
The Lord Lieutenant of Gwent, Simon Boyle, presented the 2012 Olympic torch bearer with a BEM at Pontypool Civic Centre.
Mr Knowles, of Cwmbran, said: “I am very pleased but I just feel I have been lucky to get it.
“It is very much a recognition of people who do voluntary work.
“It is on behalf of everyone who does community work.”
The former civic servant carried the Olympic torch in Ross-on-Wye before the London Games and now works for the disability charity Cartrefi Cymru.
