ON A spring Sunday morning at Jenner Park, Cogan Coronation Under-15s faced local neighbours Sully in the Steve Williams Memorial Cup final.

With both sides packing the supporters into the stands it was all set for an entertaining morning of football.

The opening moments were cagey as both sides looked to carve out an opening, but with only 20 minutes gone Cogan manager Lee Williams altered the shape of the team and that proved to change the tide.

The newly laid 4G pitch at Jenner Park suited Cogan's passing brand of football with full backs Ellis Dibble and Will Parsons causing problems down the flanks creating attack after attack.

Luke Birnage and Adam Davies, an uncompromising pairing at centre half, now sniffing out any threat of the pacy Sully striker as they have done efficiently all season.

Aiden Ellis mopping up in goal anything over hit as Sully began to play longer balls. Matty Frost was now holding the midfield whilst skipper Louis Crook, Eithan Singh and Luke Warlow began to take hold of the game as they began to find space on the big pitch.

Another move down the left started by Parsons fed the ball into Logan Newcombe who made a yard of space to unleash a 25 yarder that the 'keeper could only parry onto the crossbar.

As the ball rebounded Parsons who had continued his run was on hand to tap in to the delight of the Cogan support. The goal settled Cogan and they began to gain the upper hand in the contest.

As half-time approached, a half cleared corner fell to Dibble who drove the ball back into the crowded area where skipper Crook bravely dived to head in the killer second goal. At the interval changes were made giving Sully more headaches now having to deal with the pace and tricks of Jordan Jones and Tino Tabi.

Within minutes of the restart, after another neat passing move, Crook fed a ball through for Jones, who outpaced the defender and coolly finished past the oncoming 'keeper. This was now always a big ask for Sully with Cogan's miserly defence having only conceded five goals all season.

More was to come as Tabi who had been causing the Sully defenders problems with his strength upfront was fouled on the edge of the area.

Newcombe stepped up and cleverly curled the ball around the wall into the back of the net. This effectively killed off the game.

Cogan kept up the pressure though and were now playing some of their best football. Influenced by a midfield of Ryan Packer, Kellan Allison, Newcombe and Jones, Cogan played out the remaining 20 minutes keeping the ball as the clock ticked down.

Both sides deserve to be commended on the spirit the game was played in and a very entertaining game of football to watch for all who turned up.

Commiserations to Cogan player Aron Arthur who missed the game through injury but has played an important role this season in their quest for a league and cup double and wish him a speedy recovery.

Many thanks to Mel at the Cogan Coronation club for his hospitality after the game as celebrations by players, parents and the super supporters that went on late into the night.
