HERE’S another of Chepstow’s old pubs – The Mitre on Moor Street, which closed in 1912 and was demolished to make way for the town’s police station.
Also demolished was Mitre Court, a street of nine or ten houses behind the pub, and the building adjacent building to the pub.
The Mitre was not a meeting place for bishops but for woodworkers.
Moor Street had lots of pubs because of the monthly livestock markets that took place here in Victorian times until the opening of the cattle market on the Meads by the river in 1893.
Close neighbour of The Mitre was the Queen’s Head Hotel and Posting House as it then advertised itself on its sign, and home of the organiser of the Beer & Cider Festival this weekend in Chepstow.
