A LITTER-busting group in Chepstow has heralded its most recent litter-pick as a huge success, with finds including broken toys, furniture, and a 'for sale' sign.

On Sunday, a community litter pick, organised by Transition Chepstow, tackled some of the worst-affected areas of Thornwell.

Led by Transition Chepstow's Paul Gowen, the litter-picking group comprised 14 volunteers, including two children.

Together, they collected 10 bags of general waste and a further 10 bags of plastic, glass and cans for recycling – as well as a toy helicopter, a broken chair and an estate agent’s sign.

The area cleared included the approach to Chepstow along the Wales Coast path, through the Caerwent Lane M48 underpass.

After collecting the haul of rubbish, Mr Gowen, who also serves on the steering group of Chepstow Walkers are Welcome – organisers of April’s Chepstow Walking Festival – said: "Despite the great efforts by the Severn Bridge Parkrun organisers, who clean up the tunnel every week, this is a real litter problem area – hardly the welcome we want to give walkers."

The next Community Litter Pick, on March 23, will mark the beginning of Spring Clean Chepstow – a month-long campaign as part of Keep Wales Tidy’s Spring Clean Cymru.

Mr Gowen said: "We will be inviting organisations and individuals to carry out their own clean-ups to make the town more welcoming to visitors and a better place to live.

"We’ll also be hammering home the message that dropping litter is just not acceptable."

Transition's next Litter Pick, on March 23, will target the area from the town centre to the railway station, starting from Nelson Street Car Park at 10 am. Anyone wanting to take part in Spring Clean Chepstow can get in touch by emailing litter@transitionchepstow.org.uk
