Bryntirion 2 Goytre 1

GOYTRE chairman and former manager Paul Greenhagh has admitted his side could do with a win to boost the player's confidence more than their league position.

The Plough Road club lies one from bottom in the Division Three table with just four points from seven games.

And they couldn't have got any closer to picking up another one of those valuable points away at league leaders Bryntirion squandering a 1-0 lead to loose 2-1, with only eight minutes of the game left.

Greenhagh was realistic in his opinion about the match: "We were very unlucky. We really played well. We took the game to them from the start on a big pitch that suited us well, and scored after 25 minutes with a wonderful goal.

"We tried to play ourselves out of defence, which was the wrong approach. Sometimes its just better to boot the ball up the field.

"We proved in this game we can attack and defend. At one point we had our backs up against the wall, but we held strong.

"It wasn't a fair result at all. We deserved no more than a point, but a just point, because we battled hard against an unbeaten side.

"The top can beat the bottom and the bottom can beat the top. This is such a tight league, a couple of wins can push you right back in there, it's that competitive. It's a very hard division from top to bottom.

"The boys did really well, we couldn't have asked for anymore from them.

"We matched them and that wasn't a surprise to me because we have done well against a couple of guality sides this season and only lost by the odd goal.

"There are no weaknesses in this league, you have to be in top form week in week out. Every player has to be at their peak.

"We have another tough game this weekend against Troedyrhiw, but if we put in a similar performance we will be knocking on the door of victory. We could certainly do with the three points to give the boys a boost."

Goytre took the lead with a well-worked goal when striker Andy Walsh placing the ball with perfection around the keeper.

But eight minutes from time, defender Chris Perry slipped on his way into a tackle leaving Bryntirion with a man free to push the ball past Goytre 'keeper Richie Minor.

The Plough Road side were missing three of the most integral players - Scott Askew, Anthony Davies and Justin Evans.

"Goytre couldn't have come any closer to picking up only their fifth point of the season," concluded Greenhalgh.

Goytre kick off at home to Troedyrhiw this Saturday at 3pm.
