SHE'S in the Army now!

Young Heather Cam-eron is keeping it in the family when it comes to choice of careers.

The 17-year-old from Bulwark is following in the footsteps of her grandfather and father as she embarks on a life in the Army.

October saw the former Wyedean School pupil successfully complete phase I of her Army training course in Pirbright, Surrey - more commonly known as passing out.

Now training as a radio systems operator in the Royal Logistics Corps, Heather is "excited about her prospects".

Mother Julie said: "She's the first female in the family to enter the Army. I'm a bit concerned at the moment because she's doing the radio phase at Deepcut Barracks.

"She has only been there for two weeks, but it's not nice, knowing all the bad press about what sort of things have gone on there in the past." Four recruits died at Deepcut, in Surrey, between 1995 and 2002, leading to a parliamentary inquiry.

Family members have served in both world wars, and have been commandos and even squadron leaders.

Future postings for Heather could include Iraq, Germany, Ireland and Afghanistan.

"Obviously, I'm hoping it's Ireland and Ger-many!" said an understandably concerned Julie.

Heather was a member of the Monmouth Army Cadets, based at Beachley Barracks, for two years, and this made up her mind that she wanted to emulate her father, who served in the 59 Commando in Plymouth.

Heather's brother Scott, 15, is also said to be aiming for a career in the forces.

The family affair even extended to Heather's aunt flying over from New York to attend the passing out ceremony.

"We're all so proud of her," said Julie.
