MONMOUTH Rugby Club's Division Five East weekend clash with Chepstow RFC was cancelled after a member of the Chepstow squad was tragically knocked down and killed after watching Wales' victory over Fiji on Friday night, writes Keith Fairbank.

Daniel Thorne, 25, had watched the 11-10 win in the Walkabout bar in Cardiff and was returning to his home in Chepstow, when he was trapped under a bus at the junction of St Mary Street and Wood Street at 11.20pm and killed.

The scrum half's side had been due to be the visitors at Monmouth RFC for a 2.30pm league encounter on Saturday but as a tribute to the young sportsman, the fixture was quickly postponed.

Pete Walters, Monmouth's club secretary, said: "Chepstow's secretary rang me on Saturday morning at around 11.30am, obviously very upset and asking to call the game off and I agreed straight away.

"I'm now waiting to hear when the funeral will be so that Monmouth can be represented there. We have also sent a letter of condolence to the club via their secretary."

Mr Walters added that Daniel had been a great player and would be sorely missed.

Monmouth Rugby Club reported that they took a 180-strong contingent to the Millennium Stadium on Friday night to watch Wales' last-gasp win.

Club secretary Pete Walters said the club had sold more than its allocated ticket allowance, and in doing so had outdone many other local sides. He added that the local fans had encouragingly included a large number of children.
