CHEPSTOW Rugby Club's team crest will in future have 'DT9' written underneath it, as a lasting tribute to scrum-half Daniel Thorne, who died in a road accident in Cardiff on Friday night.

The club's Division Five East game with Monmouth RFC was cancelled on Saturday following the incident. But the club said this week that their scheduled game with Green Howards on Friday was "more than likely" to go ahead - adding "it was what Dan would have wanted."

Officials at the club issued a joint statement yesterday. They said: "Dan played for Chepstow for seven years, in which time he achieved many honours with the club.

"He was twice Player of the Year and was also awarded the prestigious title of Players' Player of the Year by his teammates. These awards not only reflected his talent on the pitch, but also his conduct and attitude off it."

Chepstow RFC added that Dan had given 120% for the club and "lived for rugby on a Saturday." Coaches at the club added that Dan and could have played at a higher level of the game had be been six inches taller than his five foot frame.

The club said Dan's death had left a big void in the club and also passed on their condolences to Dan's mother Judith and the family.

After the game with Monmouth RFC was cancelled, Monmouth club secretary Pete Walters said his club were now awaiting details of the funeral so that Monmouth could be represented there.

The club has also sent a letter of condolence to Chepstow RFC and added that Daniel had been a great player and would be "sorely missed."
