Parents of children at the area's only Welsh-medium school have been told it could be another five years before they can move out of its Victorian buildings.

If proposals to reorganise schools in Caldicot go ahead, Ysgol y Ffin could move from Sudbrook to Sandy Lane in Caldicot where the infants school is earmarked for closure because of falling numbers.

Rapidly-expanding Ysgol y Ffin is currently housed in the former Sudbrook Junior School which was opened in 1881.

More than 30 parents turned out to a consultation meeting on the proposals held at the school - the largest number of any of the meetings held at eight local schools.

Monmouthshire County Council's head of school improvement Malcolm Morris told them: "In terms of timescales we would probably start with Rogiet where there is a desperate need in 2009 and here we would probably be talking about 2011."

Some parents urged others to write to the county's education chief Andrew Keep asking for a new school to be built.

Ysgol y Ffin opened in 2001 with 13 pupils and currently has 64 on roll - an increase of 20 percent per year.

Parents were also concerned about the wording of the consultation document in which, despite detailed proposals for other schools, mentions only "knock-on implications" for Ysgol y Ffin.

It was felt that made Welsh-medium education appear to be an after-thought to take whatever was left after the issues around English-medium schools were resolved.

There was also concern that there was no mention of nursery provision at the Welsh school.

Mr Morris was told the meithrin (nursery) on the school site was run by volunteers and there was a need for pre-school education run by the local education authority.
