TINTERN Abbey were crowned East Gwent Division One champions last Saturday, after they beat Caldicot Town 3-1.

A Daniel Savage penalty, plus goals from Tom Marmont and Stuart Mackie, gave Tintern a 3-0 half-time lead. Mark Beresford grabbed a goal back in the second half for the visitors, but the boys from the Abbey held out to secure their first league title in four seasons.

Monmouth Town A and Underwood will now both be looking to settle for the runners-up spot, but Underwood have the advantage after they beat second placed Monmouth Town A 1-0, thanks to a David Rees goal. His side are now just two points behind Monmouth, with an away trip to Portskewett to look forward to in their final league game this Saturday.

In Division Two, Castle A strolled past Bulwark with ease to set up a title decider against Chepstow Athletic tonight (kick-off 6.15pm).

Warren Jones volleyed in the first of his five after eight minutes, then he tapped in for 2-0 after a defensive mix-up.

Bryant went close, hitting the bar, but it was five before the break through Paul Robertshaw and a powerful Jones header.

He tapped in his fourth on 56 minutes, but then had to leave the field following a late tackle. But a Chris Meddins own-goal made it seven, and ten-man Bulwark later went down to goals from Andy Robbins and Ben Antell. Final score, 9-0.

Sudbrook Cricket Club A climbed two league places to finish fourth, after winning 3-2 at Portskewett B 3-2, with Dean Clough and Chris Cummings netting for the home side.
