WORLD junior medal rower Tom Lucy is on course to try and better last year's bronze after a solid showing at the latest GB trials.

The 18-year-old Monmouth School oarsman was placed second best bowsider at a four-day training camp at Nottingham's National Water Sports Centre and is set for a seat in the top GB boat at the worlds in Amsterdam this summer.

Last year, Lucy was GB's top junior rower, but a tendon problem in his knee has seen him miss much of the winter's training.

"It's a lot better than it was, but I've just had another cortisone injection, and that rules me out for the next five days," he said.

"I was only back training for three weeks prior to the latest trials, so I'm not quite at my best.

"We've got final trials at the end of the month at Windsor's Dorney Lake - venue for this year's senior worlds and the 2012 Olympic Regatta - and with a bit of rest and then some more training on the Wye, I hope to be back on top as the No 1 bowsider."

Lucy has been paired up with Stourport's Lewis Beechey who raced in the GB quadruple scull at the world juniors in Brandenburg last year.

"We had about three sessions before the trials and finished second to two lads from Molesey," said Lucy.

The Llangovan teenager, who is also the GB senior champion in coxless fours, doesn't mind whether it's the pair or the four for the worlds in Holland.

"Last year I won bronze in the four behind Romania and Germany, which was great, but I'd love to make it gold this time," he said.
