GOYTRE were only able to pick up a point from two home games this week, first going down 4-2 to promotion chasing West End, then failing to beat lowly Penrhiwfer.

Club chairman Paul Greenhalgh admitted West End were "a very good side" after Wednesday's defeat, brought on by a brace from Neil Phillips. Phillips caught Goytre napping after just two minutes, breaking free on the right and lobbing the keeper. But the visitors got right back into the game and equalised on 20 minutes, Kevin Wallace winning the ball and Mark Langford sliding a perfect pass for Graham Mason to finish. Ten minutes later Phillips broke past Goytre's Andy Walsh and Dean Taylor and netted. The home side then pressed before the break and failed to equalise. Wayne Jones made it 3-1 to West End on the hour, before Collett's header from a Geoff Howells free kick looped in for 3-2.

Five minutes later an identical move saw Collett this time hit the post, before West End substitute Andrew Tyrell ended the tie.

The defeat made the visit of bottom-placed Penrhiwfer the more crucial, and Goytre were off to a dream start when Mason beat Anthony Wathan and crossed for Joe Carlos to score.

But Penrhiwfer's Mike McDonagh made himself an unpopular figure at Plough Road - twice equalising on Saturday. After earlier being denied by Ryan Mackernass in, he scored his first on 25 minutes from the edge of the area and later let loose from some 35 yards to snatch a point. In between, Walsh had restored the hosts' lead with a header but the game petered out after the 50th minute goal.
