AN UNPRECEDENTED third win in a week for Chepstow Town on Monday night has enabled Barrie Vassallo's men to leap five places up the Welsh League Division Three table.

One goal in each half at Cwmbran Stadium was enough to see off Celtic, after wins last week against Penrhiwfer and Risca. But Vassallo is adamant his team still cannot relax until safety from relegation is mathematically assured.

Vassallo said: "After putting three wins on the bounce, we're just behind mid-table, but if we had lost them we'd be right in the mire. We still can't relax, but it's taken the pressure off a bit now."

Speaking after the Cwmbran Celtic win, he said: "It wasn't a great game, but it was a battle. They're a big physical side and to be fair to our boys, after the first half they battled and deserved the three points."

Dan Bailey's individual run from the halfway line, breaking free from the defence before finishing well, opened the scoring just before the break.

Former manager Chris Lilygreen then pounced on a re-bound from Bailey in the second half to settle the tie.

Vassallo added that the win was particularly pleasing after having to scrape around for players on Monday, and praised the second-teamers who came in to do a job.

Two days earlier, Matt Dunn opened Town's account against Risca, before Nicky Vassallo struck twice before the break

Manager Vassallo said: ""The first half we played reasonably well - but not fantastically - and were 3-0 up at half-time. We said then that we wanted to make sure that we didn't take our foot off the pedal, then for the first 15 minutes of the second half we were dreadful. They scored once, but fortunately they didn''t take too much advantage."

After weathering the storm, goals from Dominic Connor and Lilygreen settled the result, although Vassallo admitted the score was somewhat flattering.

He added: "This was a good win for us, as Risca are above us. We deserved the win, and even their manager said afterwards we were the better side, but I'm not saying we should have won 5-1."

Last Wednesday, meanwhile, Chepstow were again perhaps flattered by the scoreline at Penrhiwfer, with Nicky Vassallo hitting a hat-trick.

Fraser Williams had put the home side ahead on 17 minutes, but Vassallo hit two penalties before half time to give Town the lead. Ben Harrhy added a third, only to be cancelled out by another from Williams on 62 minutes.

Vassallo's long range effort restored Chepstow's lead before Matt Owen hit the fifth with 20 minutes to go. But the latter exchanges were overshadowed by two red cards, the first for goalscorer Owen and then Penrhiwfer's Craig Davies, before a late third goal for the home side.
