RESIDENTS in Abergavenny fighting a new skate park in their town say an amended set of plans have done nothing to resolve their problems.

Plans were first submitted for the new park in January 2005.They proposed the park went on Lower Meadow in Pen Y Pound near Abergavenny. The site is currently used by youngsters to play football, and it backs on to a sheltered housing site for the elderly.

But those living in the area say the Lower Meadow site is the wrong one for the park, which is being mainly funded by Monmouthshire County Council.

After protesters handed in a petition with nearly 500 signatures the plans were amended slightly, but those against the skate park say they are still unhappy.

Jim Vicars, of Pen Y Pound, said: "All they have done is change the altercation slightly, and that was mainly to solve the problems that football players had with it.

"A lot of children use the site for football practice, and protesters said they would lose around five metres of the pitch."

He added: "Our problem is the fact that it's still proposed to be put in Lower Meadow at all, so we're certainly still not happy."

They also complained the consultation process was not long enough. Wyndham Harris, also of Pen Y Pound, said: "A very limited number of objectors were told by the council a new application had been submitted. "They were told on the Thursday before Good Friday they would be in the One Stop Shop, which then shut for five days. We were also told many of the council officers involved would be taking extended Easter holiday."

After residents made complaints, the consultation period was extended to May 8.

But Jim Vicars added their campaign would not end with the consultation process. He said: "The problem hasn't gone away - it is still very much a big issue and we will continue to object as much as we can."
