MORE THAN 600 parents and youngsters descended on Chippenham Fields on Sunday for the finals of the Junior Gwent Cup.

But there was disappointment for the two young Monmouth sides in their cup finals, with the under-8s going down 50-25 to Cwmbran, and the under-10s losing 21-5 to the same team.

Both sides, however, had done well to make the last two, with awards presented by Dragons internationals Gareth Cooper and Sione Tu'ipulotu of Tonga.

Abergavenny triumphed in the under-9s plate, taking control of the game with Cwmbran with an early score.

Cwmbran tried everything they knew to get back into the game, but eventually Aber-gavenny ran out 15-0 winners.

The closest game of the day came in the under-11s plate fought between Tredegar and St Josephs with the lead changing hands on three occasions, before ending a 21-21 draw with the two side sharing the silverware.

And in the under-11s cup, a late winning try from Newport saw them edge out Abergavenny 14-7.

The hastily organised event was excellently put together by Nigel Donovan of Monmouth Young rugby club, as well as Monmouth RFC chairman Mel Wheeler and young rugby chairman, Paddy Mallinson.
