A STROKE of luck has enabled four keen golfers to donate over £1,000 to charity.

Meryl Espley-Parkes, Lyndon Gibbs, Roger Hopkins and Ray Turner are regular quiz goers at Pontypool Golf Club and successfully tested their grey matter at Pontypool at the latest quiz night, scooping the top prize of £10.

Wanting to share their good fortune with charity, Mrs Espley-Parkes suggested the team donate the money to Cancer Research UK's Race for life. After a brief discussion the adventurous group decided to take a chance on the club's forthcoming tote competition, in the hope of gaining more money for the good cause.

Mr Turner explained: "The golf club's tote was at a record level so we decided to gamble. We looked at the clock saw the time was 23.10 and used those as our numbers."

The following day the kindhearted members discovered the gamble had paid off and they had hit the jackpot.

Mr Turner continued: "We were over the moon to discover we had won and were able to give £1,000 to Cancer Research UK, from what started as a £10 stake."

The foursomes' luck did not stop there. Mrs Espley-Parkes relayed the tale of the team's good fortune to her employers at Barclays Bank, who kindly offered to donate a further £750 to the cause.

Mr Turner said: "We are delighted to have been able to donate £1,750 to charity as a result of what was a pleasant evening's quiz."
