JIM PHILLIS was a popular choice as new captain of Pontnewydd Golf Club's veterans' section this year, but, there again, so was the newest life member - his pet mongrel dog, Deuce.

Because when retired engineer Jim and fellow vets took to the course for the captain's inaugural 'drive-in' recently, golfers knew any wayward balls wouldn't stay lost for long - thanks to Deuce.

In fact it was the cross-bred terrier's astonishing ability to sniff out lost golf balls around the course that led to his contribution being uniquely marked with an honorary life membership.

Jim reckons the family pet has recovered as many as 3,000 golf balls over the past five years and, what's more, they all get returned to members free of charge. In return the grateful vets make sure Deuce has a regular supply of his favourite treats.

Deuce's talent was nurtured by Jim, who conveniently lives just down the road, as he took regular walks in the public areas surrounding the golf course.

Already Jim had trained his pet to identify golf balls while playing in the back garden.

It still depends on Deuce's mood on how successfully his ball hunt will be, but his average on a good day is around ten. His personal record stands at 18 in 30 minutes. He's also fussy about colours.

"He's not too interested in yellow golf balls," says Jim.

At just six-years of age Deuce might not appreciate being a member of the veterans, but there are plenty of advantages, not to mention his popularity. "He might have a questionable pedigree," said one member, "but he's a thoroughbred to us. It might be odd choosing a life member who's not even allowed into the clubhouse, but it's always a pleasure to see him around the course."
