PUPILS at Penygarn Primary School got a helping hand with their school newspaper from the Free Press this week.

Free Press reporter Jessica Gibb dropped in on their weekly session to offer advice on interview and writing skills at a special workshop.

The school newspaper team made up of pupils aged eight to 11 is hoping to put out a newspaper every term - with its first edition due out before the Easter break.

Years three and four teachers Louisa Major and Gemma Davies lead the team who meet after school every Wednesday in the school's hi-tech learning plaza.

Ms Davies said: "We meet after school, but the children also work on the paper in the day if their teachers allow, interviewing teachers and taking pictures of school events."

Ms Major said: "We let them get on with it and write what they like really, it's coming on really well."

The pupils work on different sections covering news, sport and different year groups. The newspaper also has a team of photographers and the oldest pupils in the group act as editors.

Free Press reporter, Jessica Gibb said: "The pupils have been working independently on some great ideas.

"Pupils of all abilities are taking part and it's increasing their confidence and encouraging them to be creative with writing."
